One of the most meaningful recognitions given by the Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce is  the Pacesetter Award.

Since 1969, this award has been reserved for individuals who have served this community unselfishly… who have given their time, their talents, and their hearts to help Hannibal move forward… and who have set an example that inspires the rest of us to do the same.

As you look through the list of past recipients, you’ll see something very clear — this is not just an award.
It is a legacy.

And the newest recipient has been quietly building that legacy for a lifetime.

Like many great stories… this one starts on a farm… as the oldest of several children.

And if you know anything about being the oldest of several… you know that means learning responsibility early.

Helping in the garden… ACRES of garden; helping in the kitchen; helping raise siblings.

From there, the story continues much like you might expect.

A strong work ethic and a steady path forward.

This year’s Pacesetter worked at a local drug store while in high school… learning customer service first-hand  . . including, as legend has it, navigating a rather memorable request for something they had… not yet learned the definition of.

After college, there were different directions she could have taken.

Healthcare.
Education.
Opportunities in different communities.

And in truth… she did a little bit of all of it.

But what remained constant… was something deeper.

A calling to care for people. To guide. To support.

Eventually, that calling led her into work that would define not just a career… but a legacy.

Working with families.
Working with children.
Working in those early, formative years where support can change the entire trajectory of a life.

Not in big, flashy ways, but in meaningful, behind-the-scenes ways.

And then… she came to Hannibal.

And here is where the story really begins to take shape.

Because what she helped build here… was not just a program but a new standard.

As an Educator… and as the leader of Parents as Teachers … she didn’t just do the job. She set a new bar.

We’re told that under her leadership, this program became something others across the state looked to with admiration (and maybe even envy).

But her impact didn’t stop there.

Because when someone is truly committed to a community, they don’t just serve in one place.

Over the years, she has been a familiar face and a steady presence through the Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce as a long-time Ambassador, even recognized as Ambassador of the Year . . . someone who didn’t just welcome others into the business community, but made them feel like they belonged.

She has helped guide and support some of our most treasured organizations, serving on the board of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum and contributing her time and leadership to the Hannibal Arts Council, among others.

And her leadership has reached far beyond Hannibal… serving as a leader in Missouri’s Early Care & Education Connections across northern Missouri… strengthening families and communities on a much broader scale.

If you ask her about it… she would probably shrug.

Because like many Pacesetters, the work was never about recognition.

It was about people.

It was about showing up for families.
Encouraging parents.
Supporting children.
Strengthening community… one relationship at a time.

And here’s the part where some of you might be thinking…

“I know who this is.”

But there’s more to her story. She continues to serve.

Continuing her work with families through the state.
Continuing to support those who need it most.
Even bringing that care and guidance into places many would never think to go -including weekly visits into correctional facilities. Yes, she regularly “goes to prison.”

Because for her… this has never just been a job.  It’s a calling.

And through it all… she has remained deeply grounded in what matters most.

Her family.
Her faith as an active member of Holy Family Church.
Her children, her grandchildren… and the many, many families whose lives she has touched along the way.

There are people in this room tonight who may not even realize the role she played in their story.

Families who are stronger, children who had a better start, and a community that is better… because of her.

And that… is what a Pacesetter is.

Not always the loudest voice or the most visible.

But someone whose impact is lasting… meaningful… and woven into the fabric of this community in ways that can’t always be measured.

So tonight… it is our honor to recognize a woman who has spent her life lifting others up, guiding families, and helping shape the future of Hannibal, one relationship at a time.
