What is the Civic Contributor award?
The Civic Contributor award recognizes an individual, business, or organization that has significantly contributed to the betterment of our community, making Hannibal a better place to live, work, and visit. This year, we are thrilled to present this award to an organization that truly embodies the spirit of giving back and making a difference.
Who won this year’s award – and why?
This year’s awardee has provided countless opportunities for both businesses and individuals to get involved, from partnering with impact agencies on volunteer activities like the Child Advocacy Center’s rock garden project and Birthday Blessings’ card-making initiative, to hosting events like Dine United, United Way Coffee Day, and the ever-popular Mom Prom, which not only

raises funds but also brings the community together. Their Day of Caring and Giving Tuesday events further demonstrate their commitment to year-round engagement.
Beyond these initiatives, the organization’s work is truly transformative. They’re partnering to address the critical childcare shortage in Northeast Missouri through initiatives like Kids Win Missouri and the Lunch with Legislators event, giving families a platform to share their experiences and influence policy decisions. They’ve championed not only programs but critical conversations. Most important of all, they’ve continued their vital support of local non-profits through the Community Impact Agency program, providing not just funding, but also invaluable training and resources through programs like the Nonprofit Leadership Training in partnership with the Community Foundation.
Their 2024 campaign, centered around the powerful message “Everyone Can Help Someone,” perfectly encapsulates their dedication to community improvement. They’ve gone beyond simply raising funds to foster a culture of community involvement. As Campaign Chair Angela Peters so eloquently stated, “Helping someone doesn’t have to come in the form of providing monetary donations. It could be donating their time or doing something to help someone, whether it’s volunteering or just giving them a helping hand.”
The United Way of the Mark Twain Area doesn’t just talk about making a difference; they actively create opportunities for everyone to participate in building a stronger community. They are a true embodiment of civic contribution, and it is my pleasure to present them with the Civic Contributor of the Year award. Please join me in congratulating Denise Damron and the United Way of the Mark Twain Area!
